| How long does it take to get my own website ? |
From our receiving your order form, to the site 'going live' on the world wide web normally takes only a few days. We are always busier in the weeks just before Christmas, so if the new website is intended to be a surprise Christmas present, or if it has to be ready for a Birthday, the you might want to allow us an extra few days, to be sure we don't miss the deadline. However, our customers usually get their websites setup within 4 - 7 days. |

1. Every website has to have a unique domain name (see the question 'what is a domain name' ?) You will have to purchase and register your own domain name. We here at myfamilywebsite.co.uk will do that for you, and at no extra cost. That is unless you want a special name ( like a personalised number plate) which we can register for you for an extra charge. A domain name is also known as a 'URL' 2. Hosting (see the question 'what is meant by hosting' ?) A website has to be loaded up on to a 'Server' . A Server is a large computer that stores your web pages and makes them available to the world wide web. Loading a website on to a Server is a very complicated business and you will need to use special file transfer protocol software. Unless you know the difference between ASCII or Binary language, I suggest you don't try ! The server or 'host' will charge you a monthly or annual fee. Within the price of your website, myfamilywebsite.co.uk Have included 2 years FREE hosting, making the purchase of a website exceptionally good value. After two years, you will pay no more than between £8 to £15 per month for hosting, depending upon the size of your website. 3. You will then need to produce the graphics for your web pages. This will need special software such as 'PaintShopPro' which will cost around £65.00 or so. 4. You will then need to create the web pages which will involve bringing together the text, the graphics and your pictures. For this you will need an editing tool such as 'Dreamweaver' which will cost around £100. It will also help if you have some, albeit limited, knowledge of HTML (See question 'what is HTML' ?) If all of that is not enough, you will either want to go on to a course to learn how to use the very powerful graphics and web page editing tools, or be prepared to spend hours reading the manuals and trying the tools. So, yes you can set up your own website. But before you do you will want to compare how much it will cost to purchase your own domain name, your hosting fees, and the cost of special software to what myfamilywebsite.co.uk will charge you. You will also what to compare how long it will take to do it all yourself, compared to the time it will take to fill in a myfamilywebsite.co.uk order form !

What is meant by 'Hosting' ? . . .

Having produced a website, it needs to be set up on a 'Server' that will 'host' your website. This is basically a big computer that stores your web text files, graphics, and photographs, and makes them available to be visited by anyone on the world wide web. Perhaps not surprisingly, the server charges an annual or monthly fee for hosting your website. But good news ! . . . When you buy a website from myfamilywebsite.co.uk the first two years hosting costs are included in the price of your website. Sending the files to a server is quite a complicated business and uses a special file transfer protocol language, but you leave all of this to the team at myfamilywebsite.co.uk who will do it all for you . . . . so relax ! |

Its easier than you might think ! Use the 'CONTACT US' link within the 'HOW TO ORDER' page and click on 'attachment' and then 'file'. You then simply click on the file name that you have used to store your file in any folder on your computer. If is a text file, it is probably in your 'Word' folders. If it is a photograph it will be in your 'My Pictures' folders. Click on the file you want to send us and then press 'send'. It really is as easy as that. Our team will be able to identify that it was you who sent it by your e-mail address. Sending your text and photographs by e-mail is the quickest and cheapest way of getting what you want people to read and see on your website. Every web site has a unique address, known as a 'Domain name' or a 'URL' This of course is the address that people use to find your site, wherever they are in the world. myfamilywebsite.co.uk will arrange for you to have your own unique address which will include your name or your family's name. . The cost of setting up this address on the world wide web will be included within the cost of your website. However, when we receive your order for a website, we will search the registry to see whether there is a more personal address available and then inform you of the additional cost. It is a bit like ordering a personalised number plate for your car. However, you will be under no obligation whatever to pay for your domain name, the cost will be included in the basic price of your website. . . |

After we have set up your website and it is 'live' on the world wide web, we will send you details of the low cost myfamilywebsite.co.uk updating service. You may want to change the wording of part of your website, add new information, or simply replace some photographs for more recent ones. For a small fee, every 3 months you can ask our team make the changes to your website. So your new website need not 'date' but can regularly be brought up to date. |

What is HTML ?. . . |
HyperText Mark-Up Language. This is the 'language' that web pages are produced in so that they are recognised by the host computer. All web pages on the world wide web are produced in HTML, although expensive editing software is available that can convert 'what you see' into HTML code. To produce a web page successfully still needs a basic knowledge of HTML coding, which has a unique style with each line of code being an instruction to the 'host' computer to do or show something in a certain way. s . . . |
